When the word stress is uttered most people automatically paint a picture of an adult male or female who may be simultaneously managing a home, finances, family and career. And yes these tasks can raise the stress level of a multi tasked adult, but what about youth? In a society where stress is usually associated with that of an adult the symptoms and reactions to stress in youth ages 13-18 often go unnoticed.

The truth is that many youth stress level can be equal or even higher than that of an adult. They may not be balancing a home, finances, or a career but they are trying to balance peer pressure, homework, expectations of family, extracurricular activities, self esteem, puberty and the transition to adulthood.

The changes that youth endure mentally and physically as they grow older can sometimes be overwhelming and if not addressed properly, can often clash with the responsibilities of home, school, and community. For youth who do not have an outlet or a plan of action, the result can manifest into procrastination, withdrawal,  lack of interest, lack of goal setting, frustration, decrease in motivation, unrealistic plans for the future or self doubt. The more serious results are that sometimes youth who are not able to better manage their lives turn to drugs, alcohol, bullying, crime and suicide.
